Stiler Cote Starts Off Fast in Arizona
Fior di Frutta/Wheelworks riders Oliver Stiler Cote and Josh Gewirtz began their season with the Valley of the Sun stage race in Arizona. With over 100 of the nation's top pros and category one riders it was great test of early season fitness. In the stage 2 road race, Oliver had a great finish as he made it into the small lead group and finished in 6th place in the sprint that was won by Saturn pro Mark McCormack. Josh put in great ride to finish just behind in the main group.
In the final stage, an eight corner criterium which finished in a massive fieldsprint, Oliver again rode well and sprinted to 20th place on the day. You can read more about the race and the team's great performance at VeloNews.com and cyclingnews.com:
Herriott in the Lead at Vuelta a Cuba
Todd Herriott is beginning his season racing in Cuba in a 13 day UCI stage race that travels throughout the country. Todd spent most of the opening stages of the race in a solid 3rd place on general classification, which proved that the hours on the indoor trainer in NYC had paid off. Herriott jumped into the leader's jersey after the 157 km stage 8 road race that saw him finish in the front group of seven riders. He now holds a one minute 48 second lead over second place rider Eliecer Valdes of Cuba. You can follow Todd's progress through the remaining 5 stages here.
Fior di Frutta/Wheelworks Adds New Member
After extensive off season negotiations, Justin William Peck was born on Saturday, February 15th at 8:25 AM and immediately signed for the team. At 6 pounds, 6 ounces and 18.5 inches, he should be one of the lightest climbers on the circuit, but will need to spend some time developing his skills in the junior ranks. According to his coach (and mom) Heather, "Justin seems to be planning a unique training strategy that includes very little sleep with the maximum amount of food at all times." Justin takes over the record of smallest rider on the team from former title holder Jon Hamblen.
