Josh Gewirtz spent his holiday break from school by traveling to New Zealand and doing some racing in the warm weather. He writes the following race report, and Jon Hamblen checks in with two more wins from the North Carolina Cyclocross Series.

Cheer on Matt White this Saturday as he races in the World Cyclocross Championships for Under 23 Men. Click here for some pictures of Matt from World Cup #10.

Gewirtz 5th at Tour de Vineyards Stage 4

Stage 4 of the 2004 Tour de Vineyards saw a determined Josh Gewirtz take 5th place on the 60K rainy course. Gewirtz had been off the front in Stage 3 by 1 minute with 25 K to go and was then presented with a 18K mountain to the finish. He promptly detonated 10K up the beast and was looking for payback in the next day’s Stage 4.

Gewirtz rode in the front of the field of 70 strong, which included a pair of Health Net Kiwis and other strong New Zealand pro's. With 20K to go a whittled down field of 35 was chasing a group of 3. In the closing lap Gewirtz bridged to a splintered group of 12 and was narrowly beaten in the very small bunch sprint taking 5th for the day.

After finishing he was seen down at the local pub drinking a celebratory beer, both to celebrate his result as well as the fact that New Zealand is a country where he actually meets the drinking age. Gewirtz wore his trademark stained red T-shirt and claimed that he could hear Phil Wong’s muffler while half way around the world. He would also like to thank Fiordifrutta for their excellent sponsorship and would suggest importing Fiordifrutta product to New Zealand as they are in desperate need of both stellar jams and hazlenut spreads.

Hamblen Wins Cary Cyclocross, NC, Winter Cup #4, January 22nd

While his teammate Matt White spent this weekend racing UCI Category 1 and World Cup races in Belgium, Fior di Frutta's Jon Hamblen remained in North Carolina to defend his lead in the much more prestigious Winter Cup Series. The racing in Cary was held at Bond Park, also a stop on the regular season series in the fall. Hamblen was well aware of the obstacles the course would present, having won there in October. He wasn't ready, however, for the extremely cold weather conditions, temperatures in the thirties and rain. While Jon wished that he could again go back to spending winters at his second home in Santa Barbara, CA, wasting the day away at Doug Knox's Velo Santa Barbara bike shop (at 331 Motor Way, a block off State Street). He knew that there was a job to be done this cold day in Cary, and so, he went about his preparation for the race (starting with chipping ice off of his Cannondale Cyclocross bike).

Wearing his warmest fleece Headsweats hat and jacket Jon spent a short time warming up for the race. Speaking of time, Jon's Time ATAC carbon/titanium pedals were invaluable to him today in the thick, shoe clogging mud, which never affected the Fiordifrutta cyclocrosser because of Time's innovative mud shedding design. Hamblen started the race quickly and was alone after the first two laps, chased closely by Mike Sholtze (Defeet) and Jason Morgan (Asheville BC). Hamblen looked small but strong, riding a Clif Shot induced pace and not bothered by the rough sections of dirt due to his Selle Italia saddle soaking up the bumps and keeping him sore-ass free. Each lap his Northwave shoes dug into the steep run up, giving much needed traction, helping him gain seconds on the other racers. Jon had a minute plus lead going into the last three laps and won the race to increase his lead in the Winter Cup series but there was still one more day of hard racing left. Once again, Hamblen also won the race back to the parking lot, his truck was running and heating the cab within a minute of finishing.

Hamblen Wins Chapel Hill Cyclocross, NC, Winter Cup #5, January 23rd

Even colder! Temp's in the 20's, some ice and slushy mud. This was the last race of the North Carolina Winter Cup Series, held in Chapel Hill at the High School on a fast but slippery course. Intent on staying warm, Jon started the race at a quick pace to get the blood flowing to all his frozen parts. Mike Sholtze (Defeet) stayed on Hamblen's wheel until the second lap when the Fiordifrutta rider made a mistake in an off camber muddy turn and slid out. Jon wrestled with the course marking tape stuck in his right shifter before remounting and catching up to Mike. Soon, the two were riding a fast pace again and opening the gap to chasers Phil Wycoff (Cane Creek) and Jason Morgan (Asheville BC). Sholzte was eager to create a gap on Morgan who was several points ahead of him for second place in the series . It wasn't Mike's day, however, and he faded back to the two man chase group that relentlessly pursued the lead duo. Alone again, Hamblen put the hammer down in the brutal headwind sections to increase his lead over the three chasing riders. With icy, unfocusable (non focusing) eyes Jon navigated the slippery course and had a one minute lead half way through the race, which was the point that he almost quit, when he saw that race promoter/organizer Derrick Powers was serving hot coffee in the sheltered event registration area.

Hamblen decided to wait until after the race, though, and kept riding, foolishly unaware that the coffee was being consumed at an incredibly high rate other racers and race fans. Jon went on to win the last race of the series and took home the overall Winter Cup 2005 Title but was more interested in the steaming hot coffee he'd seen other races drinking during his event. Soon after the finish, Jon hurried over to registration to get a big hot cup of coffee, knowing that it would warm his frigid body. He grabbed a used cup, not caring where it had been, pushed on the pump of the coffee carafe and... nothing, not a drop left.

In preparation for the Cyclocross World Championships, Matt White has been racing some World Cup races in Europe and writes the below report from World Cup #9 in Nommay, France where he did the Under 23 men’s event. White raced with the elite men at World Cup #10 in the Netherlands and we should have some images to post soon!

Meanwhile, back in the states, Jon Hamblen has been ripping it up in North Carolina at the Winter Cup Cyclocross Series and took the first two wins for the team in 2005

Matt White’s Euro Diary, World Cup #9, January 16th

I arrived last Friday and took the train to Izegem Belgium. Noel, the US team director, forgot I was coming so I started to trek across town after leaving my bags with the train station employees. I happen to walk past a large glass window downtown and see Noel doing some business at the travel agents. He admitted he completely forgot about me. Finding him by chance saved me a three mile walk to the house.

Saturday we departed Izegem, Belgium for Nommay, France and the World Cup race. We packed the van with gear and snacks and took off. Seven hours and one awesome mountain pass later we were in the town of Nommay. We went for a ride to check out the course that afternoon. It was a typical cow pasture and tiny side street mix with a bunch of nasty steep climbs and descents, and a little mud which was bound to freeze that night in the low temperatures.

I was super nervous for race day, since I hadn't raced in a month and was about to go up against the world’s best. The gun went off and I found myself in the last five into the first corner. No problem, I felt relaxed and I would rather continue to pass people all day then go out too hard and be passed all day. I was able to do exactly that, I wish I had been able to pass a few more than 7 or 8, but that was as good as I could do. Jessy Anthony (my US teammate and Arch nemesis) was about 30 seconds ahead until he flatted and I caught him. He took a new bike and we rode together for a while until I dropped him. On my last lap the course finally got the better of me. Cow pastures are pretty bumpy and as I said the freezing temps were bound to freeze the ground solid, which they did. The whole course was bumps frost and mud. I finally crashed and broke my left hand brake lever clear off. I was fine, a bump on my shin, but it happened right next the pit and I decided that I had enough and dropped out. Luckily they still finished me 22nd. I faired better than my teammate John who after a crash was forced by a bunch of Frenchies into an ambulance, he was fine, but he stood up too slowly, they assumed because he was an American he might sue someone if he was hurt. We had to pick him up at the hospital later. Again he was fine!

On the ride home our Mercedes Sprinter (huge camper style van) broke down on the Highway and we had to push it to a hotel and call a mechanic. We should have been back to Belgium on Sunday night instead we had to wait untill the morning, but we did find a nice pizza place in the middle of nowhere France and had pizza, beer, and banana splits.

That's it for now, next a week of relaxation, long rides, big meals (waffles) and working on the bikes, Next weekend Zonnebeke Belgium C2 and Hoogerheide Holland World Cup. I can't wait to give it another go.

Hamblen Wins Hendersonville Cyclocross, Race #1 North Carolina Winter Cup, January 8th

North Carolina cyclocross series organizer/promoter Tim Hopkins gave riders a preview of the course he will use for a UCI race this November. Troy Wells (Kona/Cane Creek), looking to find some warm weather, came to NC for a week to put in some miles and race before heading to Europe for Cyclocross World's. Fior di Frutta's Jon Hamblen came to the race from his winter home in Winston-Salem and hoped to be able to complete an hour long race after taking a few weeks off from training. From the gun Troy took the lead, followed by Andy Applegate (Kona/Cane Creek) and Jon Hamblen. Troy was able to ride over the first "natural" barrier and hill while Jon crashed and slowed everyone down a bit (so they could safely negotiate the tricky hill). Hamblen soon caught back up to Wells who then attacked several times on the next two laps and got a ten second gap. Jon continued to ride steady and hard to keep Troy within site until two laps to go in the race, with two to go Hamblen realized that he probably wouldn't bonk and he started to real in Wells. Troy, noticing that the Fior di Frutta rider was getting close on the last lap, went into a downhill paved turn a bit hot and rolled his tubular. Jon cruised by him and rode the final half lap alone, taking his first victory of the year.

Hamblen Second in Morganton Cyclocross, Race #2 Winter Cup, January 9th

Decent weather again and a fun course with no barriers. Troy Wells (Kona/Cane Creek) and Fiordifrutta's Jon Hamblen conspired before the race on how to shorten the length of the event, they took the first two laps fairly easy until the lap counter came up and then they began to race. The two worked well together on the flowing course, only attacking each other a handful of times, both were content to just ride hard and get a good workout... Until the last lap which saw the two battle for the lead, up and then down the hill in the woods, all the way to the line, where Wells edged out Hamblen in a viscous sprint. This puts first place in the Winter Cup series in a tie between Troy and Jon. Wells heads to Durango and then Belgium next week to ride a World Cup and the World Championships with his US teammate Matt White (new to Fiordifrutta in '05), leaving Hamblen to lead the series into next weeks event in Greensboro.

Hamblen Wins Greensboro Cyclocross, NC, Winter Cup #3, January 15th

A cold day on the North Carolina Winter Cup Series race number 3, temperatures reaching only into the mid-forties. However, Fiordifrutta's own Jon Hamblen braved the chilly air and started the race, bundled in a long sleeve base layer and full leg warmers (missing, though, were Jon's FdF Biemme full finger gloves which were lost last summer). The course was a bit muddy and strewn with roots, with several mountain bike trails in between the grass and tarmac sections. This didn't stop Jon from jumping to an early lead on the first lap, as Colin Barry (TeamPO) and Jason Morgan (ABRC) fell on the second of four slippery wooden bridges and created a bottle neck in the bunch. Hamblen rode a steady pace the rest of the way to the finish line to claim first place and 5lbs of fresh stinky mud.

Fiordifrutta Team Announcement – 2005

Fiordifrutta, an Italian producer of organic jams and honeys, is proud to announce the roster of one of the highest ranked US amateur cycling teams. The team has spent the last five years near the top of the National Racing Calendar points classification and held the #1 amateur team ranking in July of 2004. The squad consists entirely of riders from New England and it racked up twenty-seven wins in 2004.

The team will start its season with a training camp in Tucson, AZ from February 15-28th. The schedule for 2005 includes NRC and National Championship events as well as regional races on the East coast.

The squad has always focused on the development of younger riders, and continues as the nation’s premier program to help riders step up to the next level of cycling. The team is happy to lose Shawn Milne for 2005as he moves on to ride for the Navigators Professional Cycling Team. Other team riders who have moved onto careers in professional cycling include: Justin Spinelli (Saeco, Navigators), Jonathan Page (Prime Alliance, Guerciotti), Mike Jones (West Virginia, Healthnet), and Matt Svatek (Sportsbook.com). Team riders who have ridden for the US National Team in Europe include: Oliver Stiler-Cote, Shawn Milne, Darby Thomas, Robbie Dapice, and Donny Lopez. Team members have held more than twelve National Championship titles.

The team in 2004 is the largest to date at fourteen riders, consisting of nine returning veterans and five new additions. The veterans are highlighted by team leaders Jon Hamblen and Mike Dietrich. Hamblen was the rider of the 2003 squad with the most victories (14), and looks to improve on his fourth place finish from the 2004 Elite National Road Race Championships. Dietrich finished 6th in the same race, and is confident that he can return to form after a broken collarbone brought a premature end to his 2004 season. Phil Wong and Peter Hult return for their second season with Fiordifrutta, and both riders topped off their 2004 seasons with top finishes. Wong was 2nd place at the Mt. Washington Hillclimb and Hult finished in 4th place as the top amateur in the Green Mountain Stage Race.

Other returning riders include cyclocross superstar Johs Huseby who was 2nd at the 2004 National Cyclocross Championships for 30-34 Men, and Don Mills and Josh Gewirtz whose combined tactics and strength make them a part of every team win. Rider managers Chris Peck and Curt Davis continue with the team, and the nine wins between them in 2003 and 2004 prove that they are as strong as ever.

New additions for 2005 include Matt White, who after a fourth place finish at the National Cyclocross Championships in the Under 23’s will represent the US at the World Cyclocross Championships. Larry Perera comes to the squad with the strength and experience from having spent two years in the professional ranks for Sportsbook.com and Sharper Image/Mathis Brothers. Michael Cody and Dan Timmerman also signed on after showing tremendous progress rising through the USCF ranks in the last year. After a podium finish at the Tour of Ohio last year, Chris Rozdilsky will bring his all-around power to the team.
